Packaging Materials and Recycling in Finland: A Practical Guide to Online Shopping
Packaging materials and recycling: separate the product from the packaging

An online purchase often creates several layers of material: the shipping box, the filler material, the product packaging and the product itself. Recycling is assessed by material, not by which purchase the packaging was connected to.

Cardboard

Clean, dry cardboard packaging is sorted in Finland according to the cardboard packaging guidelines. Tape and small plastic parts do not usually prevent cardboard from being sorted, but it is worth checking the local guidance.

Plastic packaging

Plastic packaging is sorted into the plastic packaging collection when it falls within the scope of the collection. The product itself is not automatically packaging plastic.

Glass packaging

Not all glass items belong in the glass packaging collection. The collection is intended for packaging, not for example for drinking glasses or other glassware.

Metal packaging

Metal cans, lids and caps are sorted by material. If a package has several parts that are easy to separate, they can be sorted separately.

Dirty packaging

Packaging does not need to be washed sterile. Empty it as well as reasonably possible. If cleaning would require a lot of hot water, the environmental benefit may remain small.

The product page can help

If the manufacturer states the packaging material, the information should be shown in the online store. A vague “eco packaging” is not as useful as concrete material information.

Combination packaging should be taken apart if it can be done easily

The plastic window of a cardboard box, a metal cap and a plastic bottle can often be separated from one another before sorting. However, do not take packaging apart in a dangerous way or by force.

Packaging and product are different waste streams

A plastic everyday item does not belong in the plastic packaging collection just because it is made of plastic. The packaging collection applies specifically to packaging.

Local sorting guidance takes precedence over general advice

In Finland, Rinki and your own municipality's waste management provide up-to-date guidance. For mixed materials in particular, it is worth checking the local guidance.

Empty, not sterile

Packaging should be emptied as well as reasonably possible. A small residue does not usually mean that the packaging has to be washed with a large amount of hot water.

Remove parts that are easy to separate

The plastic window of a cardboard box or the metal cap of a bottle can be sorted separately if they come off easily. Do not use tools just for the sake of sorting.

Check Rinki or local waste management

Sorting guidelines may be updated. Up-to-date Finnish guidance is better than an old blog rule of thumb.

Do not sort by the name of the material but by the intended use of the packaging

A plastic item and plastic packaging are not the same waste stream. The same applies to glass. In collection guidance, what matters is whether the item is packaging and what local waste management instructs for that material.

Outer packaging and product packaging should be separated from each other

An online order may include a shipping box, filler material, the product's own cardboard, a plastic bag and possible protective films. Not all of them are sorted in the same way.

The first step is to separate the materials from one another. Cardboard, plastic, metal and mixed materials are taken to their own collections according to local guidance.

Clean packaging is easier to recycle

Empty and dry packaging can usually be sorted by its material more easily than packaging with a lot of product left in it. Residues of a cosmetic or hygiene product may affect sorting, so it is worth checking the guidance of the local waste company.

The product should not be poured down the drain just to empty the packaging, unless there is a separate instruction for it.

Mixed-material packaging may need to be taken apart

A cardboard box may have a plastic window, a metal closure or a foam plastic insert. If the parts come off easily, they can often be sorted separately. If they cannot reasonably be separated, the local sorting guidance decides.

Packaging does not have to be taken apart by force to the point where there is a risk of injury.

A recycling mark helps, but does not replace local guidance

A material code on the packaging may indicate the type of plastic or other material, but collection systems vary. In Finland, it is worth checking the up-to-date guidance of your own municipality or waste company.

It is better for an online store to link to reliable sorting guidance than to make an overly certain generalisation about all packaging.

Reusing the shipping box can make sense

An intact box and filler material can be reused, for example for a return or for your own shipment. Remove old address labels and make sure the box is structurally intact.

Reuse is not sensible, however, if the box has become wet, torn or lost its rigidity.

“Recyclable” and “recycled material” are different claims

Packaging may be made partly from recycled material, or it may be recyclable after use. These are two different things. On a product page, an environmental claim should state which one is meant.

A general “eco packaging” without further information is weaker than a concrete percentage or material description.

The colour and label of plastic packaging may affect sorting

Not all plastics behave in the same way in the recycling process. However, consumers do not need to carry out an industrial material test at home. Empty the packaging and follow the local plastic packaging guidance.

If the packaging does not belong in the packaging plastic collection, the waste company's search service helps in finding the right place.

Small parts should be kept under control

Caps, pumps, protective films and small inserts can easily end up in mixed waste or in nature. While unpacking, gather the small parts together and sort them at the end.

This is a simple way to reduce littering without a complicated system.

An online store's packaging data could be more precise than it is now

A good product page can state at least the main material of the product packaging and any refill option. If the manufacturer has official recycling guidance, it can be linked.

In environmental claims, precision is more important than green symbols or general words.

In Finland, sorting should be checked locally

Collection points and details may change. The purpose of this article is therefore not to replace the guidance of your own area's waste management, but to help identify materials and ask the right questions.

Once the material is known, the right collection can usually be found quickly in the local sorting search.

In packaging sorting, emptiness is an important practical criterion

Packaging should be emptied as well as possible before sorting. A small residue of product does not always prevent recycling, but wet or half-full packaging can contaminate other material.

Follow the more detailed guidance of local waste management for different product groups.

The cap and the bottle may be different materials

A plastic bottle may have a cap or pump made of a different plastic. If the parts come off easily and the local guidance advises sorting them separately, do so.

If removal requires tools or breaks the packaging in a dangerous way, it usually does not need to be done by force.

Tape and labels on cardboard packaging do not always need to be removed

The collection system usually tolerates small amounts of tape and labels, but large plastic parts can be removed if that is easy to do. Local guidance decides the details.

Packaging does not need to be washed perfectly clean with unnecessary water.

Refill packaging reduces material only if it is used correctly

A refill pouch may use less material than a new rigid bottle, but the benefit arises only when the original dispenser is reused. Check whether the packaging is actually intended for a refill system.

Do not fill an old bottle with a different product without the manufacturer's instructions.

A recycling logo is not a general quality mark

An arrow symbol can indicate a material code, a collection system or other packaging information. It should not automatically be interpreted as a claim that the packaging is recycled perfectly everywhere.

Check the meaning of the symbol and the local collection.

An online store can help by showing the packaging material in advance

If the product's packaging material and refill option are known, they can be added to the technical information. This helps environmentally conscious comparison better than a general “eco” label.

Precise data is, again, more useful than a vague marketing word.

Packaging should be flattened only when the material and collection allow it

Flattening a cardboard box saves space in the collection container, but wet or heavily soiled material should not be packed in with other clean cardboard. Local waste guidance tells you the exceptions.

Plastic packaging does not need to be squeezed so tightly that any liquid residue splashes into the surroundings.

Recycling guidance should be kept separate from environmental marketing

“Responsible packaging” or “eco” does not yet tell where the packaging is sorted in Finland. The concrete material, any recycling mark and local collection guidance are far more useful information.

Reducing packaging material should be assessed alongside the protection of the product

Packaging that is too light can increase transport damage and cause more waste through returns. Good packaging design uses as little material as possible without compromising the protection of the product.

Environmental benefit therefore does not automatically mean the smallest possible box.

Reusable packaging needs a working return or use model

A durable box is useful for the environment only if it is used several times. The online store should clearly state whether the packaging can be returned, reused or sorted into regular collection.

The use model is more important than a mere “reusable” label.

Packaging should be taken apart by material type

The packaging of an online purchase may contain cardboard, paper, plastic, cushioning and various tapes in the same package. Recycling works better when the parts are separated from each other before sorting. One package therefore does not necessarily belong entirely in the same collection container.

Local sorting guidance is the most important source, because practices may vary by region. In Finland, the guidance of your own municipality or waste company tells where a particular material belongs.

Clean packaging is easier to recycle

If the packaging has become wet, heavily soiled or contains product residues, its recyclability may change. Light cleaning or drying may help in some cases, but water or energy should not be used unreasonably for a single package.

The goal is to make the material clean enough for sorting, not to restore the packaging to like-new condition.

Tapes, labels and cushioning should be checked separately

A cardboard box may contain plastic tape, metal staples or plastic air cushions. Some waste systems allow small amounts of foreign material, while others recommend removing them. Local guidance therefore decides.

Cushioning can also be saved for the next shipment if it is clean and intact. Reuse may make more sense than immediate recycling.

Product packaging and shipping packaging are different things

The product's own packaging often contains instructions for use, batch numbers and warranty-related information. It may not be worth discarding right away, even though the outer shipping box can be recycled immediately.

Before disposing of the product packaging, it is worth saving at least the model number, the manufacturer's details and any warnings. This way useful information is not lost with the recycling.

The packaging of electrical and electronic products does not change the recycling category of the product itself

Even if a device is delivered in a cardboard box, the device itself, battery or cell does not belong in the cardboard collection. At the end of the product's life cycle, waste electrical and electronic equipment and batteries are handled according to their own collection guidance.

It is therefore worth thinking of the materials of the packaging and the product as separate streams.

A recycling mark helps, but local guidance decides

A material code or recycling symbol on the packaging may make identification easier, but on its own it does not tell whether the material is accepted in the collection of your own area. The local waste management system decides in practice.

When an uncertain package is checked once from the right source, the next similar sorting is already much easier.

The amount of packaging material can be reduced already when placing the order

If the online store offers combined delivery or the option to avoid extra gift packaging, the choice may reduce the amount of waste generated. This is often more effective than trying to solve everything only at the sorting stage.

Reuse before recycling, if the material is clean

An intact cardboard box, cushioning or resealable bag may later serve in a move, for storage or in a return shipment. Reuse extends the life of the material before recycling.

Unclear recycling guidance should be resolved from a local source

If the packaging has multilayer material or an unclear plastic marking, your own waste company's search service is better than guessing. A single check also teaches you for the next similar package.

Return packaging should not be discarded too early

If the suitability of the product is still uncertain, the shipping box and protective materials should be kept for a while. They can make a safe return easier and reduce the need for new packaging material.

Packaging size also affects the efficiency of transport

An unnecessarily large box needs more cushioning and takes up more space in transport. The buyer cannot always influence this, but the online store's packaging solution is still part of the overall environmental impact.

Sorting is easier when the packaging is taken apart immediately on receipt

The shipping box, paper filler, plastic bag and product packaging can be separated as soon as the product has been checked. This way the materials do not remain mixed in the same box for weeks, and recycling happens more easily. At the same time, it is worth keeping only those parts that may be useful for a return, warranty or later storage.

A packaging marking does not always tell the whole structure

Multilayer material may look like paper or plastic even though it has several layers. If the sorting is not clear, local waste guidance decides better than an assumption based on appearance.

A good packaging solution combines protection and a reasonable amount of material

Too little protection increases the risk of damage, but a huge box for a small product produces unnecessary waste. The packaging quality of an online store should also be seen as efficiency, not only as the amount of material.

Recycling should be made part of the unpacking routine

Once the product has been checked and it is clear which materials are needed for a possible return, the rest can be sorted immediately. This way a separate pile of online store packaging does not build up at home waiting for later sorting.

A material code should be read only as an aid to identification

Numbers and letter abbreviations help identify the type of plastic or other material, but the actual collection guidance comes from the local waste system. The same material code may belong to a different collection in different areas.

Successful recycling starts with not needlessly mixing materials

If clean cardboard comes into contact with a leaked product, its recyclability may deteriorate. Liquids and other products that may leak should therefore be separated from the shipping packaging immediately on receipt.

The main goal of sorting is to keep material streams clear

When cardboard, plastic, cushioning and any electrical device are separated from each other right away, it is easier to follow local waste guidance. Unclear material should be checked separately rather than moved by guesswork to the wrong collection.
